Actiwave Cardio

The Actiwave Cardio is a waterproof ultra miniature single channel ECG waveform recorder.

The Actiwave Cardio is a waterproof ultra miniature single channel ECG waveform recorder. It consists of two electrodes connected by a short lead which simply clip onto two standard ECG pads worn on the chest. It also contains a tri-axial accelerometer, the signal from which allows the user to determine resting body position making the Cardio ideal for use in investigating sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). For a single channel 24 hour holter recording the Actiwave Cardio gives unsurpassable wearability. The very small size allows for continuous monitoring in a wide range of patients.

How it works

The Actiwave Cardio attaches to the chest using standard ECG electrodes with 4mm male snap connectors. An internal accelerometer measures 3 axes of acceleration which can be used to determine body position. Physiological signals are amplified, sampled and stored in non-volatile flash memory.

At the end of the recording, the Cardio is removed from the electrodes and placed on a dock connected to a PC. The Actiwave control software transfers data from the recorder to the PC via the dock and USB cable. Actiwave data is stored on the PC inEuropean Data Format (EDF+) files. The user may view and analyse the files using several popular third-party software packages, including some public-domain software. For full information please see the Actiwave Software page. The optional Cardio Viewer Software may be used to analyse files recorded by the Cardio and is ideal for interpreting the output of the ECG as well as the three axis acceleration data.

The Cardio offers short period waveform recording at greater resolution than the Actiheart, alongside the three axis accelerometry data. It opens wider possibilities in short term recording and waveform data analysis, but without the Actiheart’s strong focus on longer term recording and energy expenditure. Both are capable of capturing data for Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis.

  • ECG 24 hour Holter recordings
  • Suitable for adult or paediatric use – shorter leads available
  • Truly free living recordings of ECG
  • Epidemiology
  • Ideal for veterinary applications

Actiwave provides the easiest way ever to record physiological waveform data from ambulatory subjects. The device is controlled via the USB reader and the intuitive software, which can be used in the following ways:

  • Configure/setup of the Cardio
  • Download data from the Cardio
  • Standard, EDF+ data format
  • View data using freely-available software
